Overnight oats are a super easy and filling option for breakfast, especially if you are someone who is short on time in the morning. I like to make mine the night before so that my oats are nice and puffy come breakfast time! Here is how to make these berry overnight oats, step by step.
Step 1: Oats
The key to overnight oats is having equal parts liquid to solid. This is a smaller jar, so I only needed 1/2 cup of rolled oats and 1/2 cup of almond milk. In my opinion, rolled oats are best for making overnight oats. They absorb the liquid better and are nice and soft, where as steel cut oats need to be cooked on the stove top before they soften up and can often be crunchy and hard. I use Bob’s Red Mill Organic brand, but you can use Quaker or your brand of choice!
Step 2: Add Your Flavor
I always try and mix in a little something with my oats so they don’t just taste like almond milk. My go-to is usually all natural peanut butter, because lets face it -peanut butter is good with everything. It also helps to make your overnight oats a little bit thicker, which I personally like. Alternatives that I have tried include Nutella, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract, but I tend to stick with peanut butter!
Step 3: TOPPINGS
This is the best part, hands down. There are so many things that you could put into overnight oats, you will never run out of combinations to try. That’s why I make them so often-I never get bored! This recipe I used raspberries, sliced strawberries, chopped walnuts, shredded coconut, honey and cinnamon. The standard formula for me is 2 of more types or fruit, some nuts or coconut, and a spice or sweetener on top.
From start to finish (including the time it took for me to take these photos) this recipe took 10 minutes to make! I have a few of these glass jars that I use specifically for my overnight oats so that I can make a few different kinds for the week. Overnight oats stay good for up to 3 days in the refrigerator, which is perfect for those of us who like to meal plan. This morning I was a little slow getting out of bed thanks to the Game of Thrones premiere last night. I am a HUGE fan, so I foresee overnight oats becoming my go-to Monday morning breakfast over the next 10 weeks!
